Matching A Wood Head To A Player's Game

fitting woods.

The size of a wood is an element that may provide forgiveness to many players. The larger the wood from heel to toe, the better balanced it will tend to be on less than perfect hits. Large heads have higher moments of inertia, meaning they will twist less on non-center impacts. Inexperienced players will find an immediate benefit in most cases with larger clubheads. One possible problem: many players, especially those who have been playing a long time, believe large heads look unwieldy and will not accept this cosmetic that size creates. In most cases, a recommendation would be to fit a player with as large of a driver as he or she is comfortable with due to the corrective advantage on imperfect shots. Do remember that fairways do not necessarily have to match drivers, so you may fit a player with a large driver for accuracy and smaller fairways to help get the ball airborne.
