Not All Fairway Woods are Created Equal        
   
 
  Twenty years ago, all fairway woods were created equal. If you picked up a steel-shafted men's #5-wood from virtually any manufacturer you would find the specifications to be 41" (within ½"), 57° lie (+/- 1°), 22° loft (+/- 1°). Today is a totally different story. Nowadays, graphite shafts replace the steel shafts in modern metal woods. The average OEM length is now longer    
         
  (42.5"), loft is stronger (18°) and lie more upright (58°). The length & loft of the modern #5-wood is more like yesteryear's #4-wood, while today's #7-wood replaces the older #5-wood. As some of the fairway woods have become longer, the head weights have become lighter, especially when you look at heads that are weaker lofted than a #3-wood. Each manufacturer has their own set of "standard" head weights for their "standard" lengths. No longer can we assume that a #7-wood will be 228g. This will have an impact on how to tip trim the shaft properly to achieve the flex designed by the manufacturer. This tech tip will hopefully
