The first thing to do is not to pay as much attention to the number engraved on the sole, rather the weight of the head. This could be no more true today if you look at so many heads on the market that provide only the loft and not a traditional number to the head. Examples of which are Cleveland's Launcher series, Titleist 980F, Orlimar Tri-Metal II, and Dynacraft's own Jackaroo II fairway woods. Take a look at Callaway's Great Big Bertha II #11-wood. The loft is 24°, length 41" (with graphite) and head weight of 228g. Compare that to Dynacraft Avatar Launch Series #11-wood. This would represent the 33° model whose suggested length with graphite is 40" and a head weight of 238g. If you were to tip trim the two clubs the same, the Callaway club would feel stiffer due to the lighter head weight. Thus, the 228g head weight |
