shots, causing them to stop more quickly when they hit the green, again leading to shots that stay closer to the hole. There are two main things, besides looks, to consider when fitting a player for a wedge: loft and bounce. Loft is the angle of the club head away from the target. The more it is angled, the higher the loft. Pitching wedges have the least loft of the wedges, with an average of 50 degrees. Utility wedges have the most loft, sometimes with more than 60 degrees. Sand wedges are somewhere in between with average lofts of @55 degrees. Most players should probably carry a wedge of each type. The PW will work well from fairways and light rough from 75-100 yards for the green for most golfers. You have no doubt played with people who can hit their pitching wedge 150 yards – or so they claim. Big deal; if the ball goes that far on a wedge shot, it probably doesn’t go very straight. Always keep in mind that wedges are for control and accuracy, there are other clubs in the set designed for distance! |
